Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has made a personal contribution of shillings 100 million towards the construction of the Bugweri district Muslim headquarters.

She donated on Thursday, April 4, 2024, during the burial of counsel Ramathan Waiswa at Butende village, Ibulanku sub-county in Bugweri district.

Waiswa, who was Bugweri County MP Abdu Katuntu's brother, died in a road crash at Akodet village on the Paliisa-Kumi highway a day earlier.

The lawyer, who is survived by a widow and three children, was reportedly travelling back to Kampala after attending a court session at Soroti High Court.

Among promised to offer a job to the widow Hailat Mutesi at Parliament starting next week to be able to raise her three children following the death of their father.

Let us be sensitive

The Speaker urged politicians to always desist from making political statements during burial ceremonies but always wait for the right time to avoid being misjudged by the public.

“People might think we as politicians as inhuman because there is time for everything, “she said.

Among's statement about inhumanity followed National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro asking her to stop making verbal attacks against her predecessor, Rebecca Kadaga, since Basoga people pride in her (Kadaga) for being their mother.

Mufumbiro accused Among of making verbal attacks against Kadaga who is also the Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Affairs, on several occasions as being a worthless person who failed to deliver to the people of Busoga despite holding higher offices for a long period.

Katuntu said he was rushed to the hospital after receiving the news of the sudden death of his younger brother.

Speeding caused crash

Pallisa Resident District Commissioner Majidu Dhikusoka, while speaking to mourners about the crash, said the driver of the Toyota Prado, Ronald Waiswa, who also perished, was speeding and was shocked to discover that the driver had lost control and the vehicle overturned several times 'three kilometres from where they had overtaken my official vehicle'.

Dhikusoka urged drivers to always drive within the recommended speed limit to avoid similar incidents.

Uganda Law Society president emeritus Benerd Oundo described the deceased as an intelligent, humorous person who always shared ideas with colleagues that are beneficial in handling issues of their clients.

“Whenever you could meet him he had an idea that he would present that is useful for colleagues in the profession or handling issues of our clients,” he said.

Call for road equipment provision

Bugweri LC5 chairperson Hajji Shafiq Muziransa urged the Government to elevate Bugweri Health Centre IV to a district hospital since it handles a big number of patients from the neighbouring districts.

Muziransa asked the government to speed up the delivery of road equipment’s reduce the costs it incurs towards hiring machinery for renovation and upgrading of the road network.

Mpuuga cautions politicians

Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga cautioned politicians against making jokes and instead always be focused and serious in case they are to serve the country freely and fairly.

Mpuuga accused some Opposition politicians holding top positions of moving around and making statements without consulting first. According to Mpuuga, this makes the politicians look like they are comedians.

Prayers were led by the regional Mufti Busoga, Sheikh Hussein Bbowa.
