Two weeks after his earlier victory was nullified over alleged electoral irregularities, Collins Tanga, the son of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) electoral body chief Dr Tanga Odoi, has reclaimed the top seat in the party's youth wing, sweeping the fresh polls held across all 151 districts on September 18.

The rerun came after the NRM Election Disputes Tribunal annulled the initial results from the highly contested race for National Chairperson of the NRM Youth League at the recently concluded Central Executive Committee (CEC) polls, citing widespread irregularities, including potential conflict of interest surrounding Odoi’s role in overseeing the process, where his son Collins was a contender.

The tribunal also barred Tanga Odoi from taking part in the rerun in any capacity.

However, despite the controversy, the fresh elections delivered a decisive outcome as Collins emerged with an overwhelming majority, securing 2,106 votes, a significant increase from the 1,567 he had garnered in the first election.

Brenda Kiconco, who had led the petition that led to the nullification, came in second with 1,005 votes (32.3%), followed by Wilson Otto and Mackline Natukwasa, who managed to get two votes each. The remaining candidates, Jacob Eyeru, Nicholas Nuwagaba, Hillary Twassima, Pascal Natamba, Geoffrey Mugisha and Davis Mbabazi, didn’t register any votes.

“I, therefore, declare Collins Tanga, who has polled the highest number of votes (2,106), representing 67.6%, as the duly elected National Chairperson of the NRM Youth League,” announced Fred Omach, vice chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission.

Tumwebaze Mwine also clinched the western region flag with 353 votes (40%), while Samuel Begira swept the Central Region with 459 votes (78.6%).

In the eastern region, Judas Thadeo Wanyama emerged on top with 394 votes (40.2%), and Elma Kapel Challa led the northern region with 602 votes, defeating 11 other contenders.

In the hotly contested race for the Female Youth MP flag bearer, Daina Ampaire emerged victorious with 1,912 votes (58.6%), far ahead of her closest challenger, Mercy Kanyesigye, who secured 1,269 votes.
