One killed, several injured in election-related violence in Gomba

A night of political rivalry turned deadly in Gomba district after a violent clash between rival campaign supporters left one person dead and several others injured, police have said.
The incident occurred at around 1:00 am on July 28, 2026, in Kiziba village, Mamba parish, Kyegonza subcounty, and was reported to Kanoni Police Station at 7:00 am the same day.
It was registered under file reference DEF 17/2026 (Kanoni CRB 595/2026).
Police identified the deceased as Edirisa Nsubuga, 40, a bouncer from Kikambwe village, Bulo subcounty, Butambala district.
Also injured was Yuda Mutebi, 27, also a bouncer from the same village. No arrests have been made so far.
According to preliminary police findings, the violence was allegedly orchestrated by Lauben Muhabuzi, a Local Council One (LC1) candidate, who is said to have hired a man identified as Balamu and other unknown persons to attack supporters of his rival, Kamadi Bongole.
The attackers reportedly used a vehicle registered as UAU 925H to move through the village.
However, the plan appeared to backfire. As the hired attackers descended on Kiziba village, beating supporters of the rival candidate, the targeted group mobilised and fought back, turning on Muhabuzi's camp and leaving Muhabuzi himself, Mutebi and Nsubuga injured.
Police said Nsubuga was reportedly an employee of Muhabuzi.
Police from Kanoni Police Station rushed to the scene and evacuated the injured to Ebenezer Clinic in Kanoni Town Council.

A homicide/scene of crime officers team later combed the area and recovered three pangas believed to have been used in the attack.
Investigators also found the vehicle allegedly used by the assailants, UAU 925H, with a damaged window and a shattered windscreen.
The deceased's body has since been taken to Gombe Hospital for a postmortem.

Detectives are now working to track down and arrest all those involved in the attack.
