National Resistance Movement (NRM) secretary general Richard Todwong has warned deep-pocketed candidates vying for various central executive committee (CEC) positions against using their money to disorganise the party ahead of voting later this month.

This was during a meeting at the party’s electoral commission (EC) offices in Kyadondo, Kampala, to remind all the candidates of the expected code of conduct for the election scheduled for August 27.

“Some of you are blessed and you have a lot of money, kindly don’t use that money to disorganise our party,” he implored the candidates who turned up on Tuesday, August 12.

A total of 290 candidates are vying for at least 80 seats on the NRM top organ, which is the de facto nucleus of political decision-making in Uganda.

“On accreditation day, I will expect the district chairperson to come with members of his delegation from his district to the centre. Should we hear that candidate X is hiding delegates, I will plead for that candidate to be disqualified,” Todwong said.

Equal treatment

The NRM secretary general assured all candidates of equal treatment.

“I want to assure you that all candidates will be treated equally, and no one will receive preferential treatment,” he said.

NRM EC chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi told New Vision Online in an earlier interview that he and Todwong agreed recently that they must take all the candidates for CEC positions through the guidelines.

“If candidates are candidates, we need to tell them the procedure, how we are going to do things, so that they get to know,” he said.

The first meeting of the 4th NRM national conference will be held from August 27-28 at Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.

According to the agenda for the meeting, the national executive council will make a presentation of the names of its recommended persons for election of the CEC positions.

These positions include the national chairperson, 1st national vice chairperson, 2nd national vice chairperson (female) and six vice chairpersons representing the regions of east, central, north, west, Kampala and Karamoja.
