KAMPALA – The Secretary General of the ruling National Resistance Movement, Richard Todwong, has expressed confidence that the party is poised to register another commanding victory in the forthcoming Local Council (LC) and Women Councils elections, saying the NRM's unrivalled grassroots structures have positioned it to dominate the polls.
Speaking ahead of the nationwide elections, Todwong said the party has completed preparations across the country and is mobilising supporters to turn out in large numbers and vote for NRM candidates.
"The NRM is not taking these elections lightly. Local Councils and Women Councils are the foundation of our political organisation and the first point of contact between the people and government. We are confident that Ugandans will once again entrust the NRM with leadership at the grassroots," he said.
Todwong noted that after the party's expected landslide victories in the presidential, parliamentary and local government elections, the LC and Women Councils polls remain a critical test of the NRM's grassroots strength and organisational capacity.
"The stakes are high because these elections complete the leadership chain from the village to the national level. We want every village, every parish and every community to have capable NRM leaders who will mobilise citizens and champion government programmes," he said.
He urged party supporters to participate peacefully, respect electoral rules and avoid actions that could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
"Our message is simple: remain disciplined, remain united and vote massively for NRM candidates. We have the structures, we have the message, and we have a proven record of transforming communities. We are confident of a clean sweep."
Todwong said the party has instructed its district and village structures to intensify voter mobilisation while ensuring that campaigns remain peaceful and issue-based.
He added that the Women Councils elections present an opportunity to strengthen women's participation in leadership and deepen grassroots democracy, while the LC elections will produce leaders who are central to local governance, conflict resolution and implementation of government programmes.
According to Todwong, the NRM enters the elections with unmatched organisational structures stretching from the national level to every village, giving the party a significant advantage in mobilising voters and coordinating campaigns across the country.
He said the party expects its candidates to emerge victorious in the majority of villages and parishes, consolidating the NRM's position as Uganda's dominant political force at the grassroots.
