The National Resistance Movement (NRM) electoral commission has postponed the party district and city structure elections in Bunyoro region till May 27, 2025.
The electoral body charged with conducting the ruling party's internal elections says the move is due to President Yoweri Museveni’s visit to the region, which is made up of Hoima city and the districts of several districts, including Hoima, Masindi, Kikuube and Kibaale.
Voting for NRM district and city party members across the country is scheduled for May 23, 2025, however, on the same day, President Kaguta Museveni will be in Bunyoro region at Kisaru Kabayanj village in Kabwooya sub-county Kikuube district at the home of public service state minister Grace Mary Mugasa's thanksgiving ceremony.
The President is expected to also address a rally after the thanksgiving.
In a letter May 19 and addressed NRM district election officers and copied to the party secretary general, region security team, district/city chairpersons, party EC chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi says the commission had postponed the election to allow local leaders to join the President at the function.
Kikuube district Speaker, who doubles as councillor for Bugambe sub-county, Christopher Nkalu commended the commission for responding to their petition.
Nkalu said since the visit of President Museveni, who is also NRM chairperson, is going to be held in Kikuube, the district leaders last week wrote to the party secretariat seeking the postponement of the election to allow them to join Mugasa in the thanksgiving celebrations.
