John Baptist Nambeshe has taken over the leadership mantle as acting president of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) political party.
Nambeshe is a member of Parliament for Manjiya County, Bududa district, and is currently serving as the Chief Whip of the opposition and Deputy President of NUP in charge of the Eastern Region.
“It's routine. Whenever party President Robert Kyagulanyi is away, he appoints one of the Deputy Presidents to act in his place. So honourable Nambeshe was appointed on July 17 as acting president of the party,” NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya told New Vision during an interview on Saturday.
For the past four months, Dr Lina Waru Zedriga, who is the party’s vice president in charge of the northern region, has been acting president of NUP.
Using his official X handle, Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, posted today that: “For four months, Dr Zedriga has been acting president of our party. During this period, she has steered the party well and kept the revolution alive. We're all very grateful for her dedication and service.”
He added, “As her tenure comes to an end, I am pleased to announce that Honourable Nambeshe, Deputy President Eastern Region, will be taking over as acting President of the National Unity Platform. I wish him well and request all leaders and comrades to accord him the necessary support."
Four months ago, Kyagulanyi fled the country, saying security personnel were looking for him to arrest him. Kyagulanyi said he travelled to the US with his wife and children.
