KIGEZI - President Yoweri Museveni is today, November 26, 2025, campaigning in the neighbouring districts of Kanungu and Rukungiri as he wraps up his trail around the Kigezi sub-region.

This will be Museveni's third and final day in the region after campaigning in the districts of Rubanda, Kisoro, Rukiga and Kabale.

All these districts are characterised by undulating green hills, which are usually smooth in outline, with steep slopes and V-shaped valleys that create an outstanding scenic beauty.

Kanungu attained district status in 2001 after being carved out of Rukungiri, the home of Museveni’s fiercest critic and four-time presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye.

Besigye, 69, who is in jail facing treason-related charges with his long-time ally, Hajji Obeid Lutale, enjoyed great popularity as the face of Uganda’s Opposition for 15 years.

This was until musician-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine burst onto the scene in June 2017 after winning the Kyadondo East parliamentary byelection.

In the last general election of 2021, Museveni, who is the National Resistance Movement party presidential flag-bearer, garnered 72,126 (84.17%) votes in Kanungu, while Kyagulanyi polled 6,722 (7.84%).

In Rukungiri, Museveni polled 77,410 (71.42%) votes while Kyagulanyi got 6,501 (6.00%).

Agriculture is the main economic activity in both districts, employing a large majority of people who are smallholder farmers using traditional agriculture techniques.

And the major crops grown, include bananas, beans, sweet potatoes, cassava, maize, Irish potatoes, coffee, peas, rice, sorghum and tea. A considerable number of households are engaged in livestock farming and the animals commonly reared include cattle, goats, sheep and pigs.

By the time of writing this story, Museveni was set to hold his first campaign rally of the day at Rwere playground in Kirima sub-county, Kanungu, and the second and final political event at Rukungiri district Main Stadium in Rukungiri municipality.

He is campaigning under the theme: Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.

The theme focuses on safeguarding achievements over the past 39 years, including peace and development, while aiming to propel Uganda to a high-middle-income status.

Other gains include wealth creation initiatives, job opportunities, service delivery, market access, as well as East African political federation.
