📸 Museveni in Bugweri, Namutumba to recover lost ground

Bugweri has a population of 211,511 people scattered across the eight sub-counties/town councils, 37 parishes and 147 villages, while Namutumba has 311,339 inhabitants living in 20 sub-counties/town councils, 111 parishes and 629 villages.

BUGWERI - President Yoweri Museveni is today (Monday, November 17, 2025) campaigning in the neighbouring districts of Bugweri and Namutumba, where he lost ground among voters in the last general election.

In the 2021 general election, Bugweri had 84,953 registered voters; out of these, 47,064 (55.4%) voted.

National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate Museveni polled 17,428 (38.7%) votes in Bugweri while his chief rival, Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform party, garnered 25,939 (57.6%).

Bugweri now has 96,437 registered voters, an increase of 11,284. The polling stations are 230, up from 154 in 2021.

In Namutumba, registered voters were 121,149 in 2021, and out of these, 71,427 (58.9%) voted.

Museveni polled 38,427 (56.1%) votes while Kyagulanyi obtained 27,504 (40.1%).
Namutumba now has 152,369 registered voters, an increase of 31,220. The polling stations are 386, up from 243 in 2021.

Population

Bugweri has a population of 211,511 people scattered across the eight sub-counties/town councils, 37 parishes and 147 villages, while Namutumba has 311,339 inhabitants living in 20 sub-counties/town councils, 111 parishes and 629 villages.

Both districts were carved from Iganga, with Namutumba first in July 2006 and Bugweri in July 2018.

In Bugweri, reports say there is a high reliance on land for livelihoods for crop growing and brick laying.

However, human activities such as construction, charcoal burning as energy for cooking have led to environmental degradation, affecting climate change and soil fertility, according to the district officials.

In Namutumba, subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry are the two main economic activities.

Museveni is campaigning for a seventh term in office under the theme: Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.

The theme focuses on safeguarding achievements in the last 39 years, such as peace and development, while aiming to propel Uganda to a high middle-income status. 

Other gains are wealth creation initiatives, jobs, service delivery, markets, as well as the East African political federation.
