Muntu pledges reforms to make justice accessible to all citizens

"Under my government, when elected, I will fight corruption in the lands ministry and the Judiciary, which have denied all the land rights to the poor," he said.

The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. (rtd) Mugisha Muntu has pledged to introduce new justice reforms to ensure that ordinary Ugandans can access fair trials and start winning cases in the courts just like the wealthy under his government.

Criticising the current judicial system, which he claimed thrives on widespread corruption and is influenced by executive interference and presidential directives, Muntu vowed to make justice accessible to all.

"Under my government, when elected, I will fight corruption in the lands ministry and the Judiciary, which have denied all the land rights to the poor," he said.

Muntu made these remarks on Sunday (November 2) while campaigning at Seguku ward, Makindye – Ssabagabo municipality in Wakiso district.

"If the court system is fair, even poor people can win cases. If they bribe the police or the judges, we shall arrest them under my government," he warned.

He argued that a country where the judicial system is unjust cannot have peace and that a new government is needed to restore hope to citizens through a fair justice system.

Land grabbing worries citizens

Augustine Rwabuni, a Seguku resident, said that land grabbing in the area has been facilitated by the lands ministry, which issues multiple titles on the same pieces of land.

"Now that you have come here to ask for our votes, you should help us deal with corrupt land officials who give out people's land without even the knowledge of local council leaders," he stated.

Rwabuni urged locals to keep reporting land disputes promptly so they can be resolved before escalating.

Fatuma Bangi, the Busiro East Member of Parliament (MP) aspirant on ANT's ticket, highlighted that access to justice is particularly challenging for ordinary Ugandans who cannot afford lawyers or the cost of filing court documents.

"Whereas majority of Ugandans are illiterate about the justice system, more needs to be done to build confidence among ordinary persons that they can actually receive justice from the judicial system."

She added that corruption in the courts has discouraged litigants from pursuing legitimate claims.

PFF to tackle land grabbing

Joan Nabatanzi, Wakiso district woman MP aspirant on the Peoples’ Front for Freedom (PFF) ticket, pledged to fight land grabbing and unfair property rates linked to planning approvals at the district council hall.

"Fighting corruption is one of the reasons we joined efforts with Muntu to steer this country forward. We have been charged to fight land grabbers since President Museveni came to power in 1986," she said.

Shun electing leaders who give you bribes

Nabatanzi also warned voters against supporting political leaders in exchange for money, saying this practice undermines service delivery.

"You need to keep fighting injustices, land grabbing and corrupt government even when you do not have money. This is the struggle to fight for the better of our country. Do not accept handouts and money from NRM government leaders because you shall be kept under captivity for the rest of your lives. Vote capable leaders, and it is us," she insisted.

She further stated, "Do not act like beggars whom NRM leaders have taken advantage of since 1996 when electing leaders started under President Museveni’s government."

Nabatanzi condemned the practice of labelling underserved areas as NRM strongholds.

"Every underserved area is referred to as the stronghold of NRM. Please, do not refer to those who are underserved by the government to be referred to as the 'strongholds' of the underperforming NRM government," she said.
