WAKISO - The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) mobilisation barazas to collect 20 million signatures in support of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s bid for the presidency in 2031 continue across the country.
The party’s secretary general, Fadil Twalla, has revealed that the next rally will be held October 3 in Kira Municipality.
Addressing the media at the PLU headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, on Thursday, Twalla said that during the barazas, his team will also distribute endorsement books at every subcounty.
“We want 20 million signatures; it is no longer news that we have a presidential candidate for 2031 as the Patriotic League of Uganda,” Twalla said.
The move follows Muhoozi’s public declaration of his intention to contest for president in 2031.
Twalla also announced that the mobilisation drive involves promoting public health, including an immunisation campaign led by Gen. Kainerugaba's wife, Charlotte Kainerugaba.
“On October 5th, we have a blood donation at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, championed by Mrs. Kainerugaba. Let us move early in the morning to donate blood and save the lives of Ugandans who are in dire need of it,” Twalla said.
Twalla revealed that other barazas are scheduled in Kibuku, Ntungamo and Kikuube, among other districts, with further details to be communicated by the party.
“Our chairman said he wants 146 barazas across the country, and this needs robust mobilisation. We must deliver,” Twalla added.
Daniel Kabuye, a PLU Vice Chairperson of Kira Municipality, said the mobilisation activities would also be used to build support for the party ahead of the 2031 elections.
“We want to use these drives to mobilise support, and we want 90% support in 2031,” Kabuye said.
Muhoozi’s declaration has already attracted debate over the timing of his presidential ambition and his position as a serving military officer.
Under Section 99 of the UPDF Act, a serving officer who wishes to seek political office is required to resign or retire from the defence forces in accordance with regulations made by the Minister of Defence.
Muhoozi’s supporters have maintained that his presidential ambition is within his constitutional rights, while critics have questioned his continued involvement in political mobilisation while serving as CDF.
The latest endorsement campaign therefore places PLU’s mobilisation efforts firmly within the growing political debate around the 2031 succession.
