KALANGALA - Agnes Lunkuse has made history as the first woman to chair Kalangala district after being officially sworn in as LC5 chairperson following her victory in the recently concluded elections.

Lunkuse defeated National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Robert Munaaba, becoming the first female leader to occupy the district’s top political office since Kalangala district was established in 1989.

Her swearing-in ceremony, held on May 26, 2026, at the Kalangala district headquarters, was attended by newly elected district leaders, including subcounty councillors and representatives of special interest groups.

While addressing residents after taking office, Lunkuse called for support and guidance from former leaders as she begins her tenure.

“It’s my humble appeal to former leaders to always guide us when taking a wrong move,” she says.

She also urged leaders to prioritise the interests of the entire district instead of focusing only on their respective subcounties, saying this would ensure that all residents benefit from government programmes intended to improve livelihoods across the district’s 84 islands.

Unity call to leaders

Speaking during the ceremony, Bishop Moses Odong, the overseer of all Pentecostal churches in the district, urged the newly elected leaders to work closely with elders and former leaders to ensure continuity in development programmes.

“Former leaders always leave a lot in the pipeline, of which the majority are for the people’s benefit, and this calls for unity to develop our areas properly,” he says, adding that leaders at every level should put God first in their service to overcome corruption.

Kalangala resident district commissioner Fred Badda also urged the leaders to remain faithful to the vows they made during the swearing-in ceremony.

“The public may force you to bend the laws, but always stand on the truth, no matter how bitter it is,” he says, noting that some lawbreakers mislead politicians after committing crimes in an attempt to evade punishment.

During the ceremony, a new district speaker was also sworn in under the guidance of Chief Magistrate Alleluya Glory.

Michael Muwembeefu, the Mugoye subcounty councillor, was elected unopposed as speaker alongside his deputy, Betty Nalule, the Kyamuswa councillor.

The swearing-in of subcounty leadership across the islands is scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week.
