Stakeholders, including leaders and security officers at all levels in the Western Region, have been urged to avoid engaging in conduct that mismanages the LCI election process.

The call was made by Electoral Commission Commissioner Stephen Tashobya, who emphasised that every stakeholder has a mandate provided for in the law, and insisted that conducting elections is strictly the mandate of the Electoral Commission.

Tashobya insists that every stakeholder should respect their lanes in the coming elections.

Tashobya made the comments on Monday, July 13, while opening a one-day post-elections evaluation workshop for the Western Region, which was conducted at Hotel Triangle in Mbarara City.

Election process is guided by the law, and each stakeholder has a mandate provided for in the law. When you get stakeholders participating in mismanaging the election at the end of the process, the electoral commission takes responsibility,” Tashobya stated.

According to Tashobya, the purpose of the interaction was to meet different stakeholders to take stock and audit the events that took place during the past election period.

Commenting on the guidelines to follow in the LC elections, Tashobya explained that the law prohibits holding more than one political position, advising those intending to contest for LCI position but already holding a higher level to vacate one, as the law requires.

Tashobya also insisted candidates must maintain their political parties’ tickets. He warned candidates against engaging in violent actions and should respect EC guidelines.

He hailed the past elections at all levels, noting that every stage was well handled and the exercise was a success, and they had 100% performance.

The engagement attracted leaders from different districts who included district chairpersons, DISOs, CAOs, Prisons and Police officials, elderly, PWDs and women leaders among others.

Sam Mucunguzi, the Ntungamo district chairman, called on all Ugandans to turn up in big numbers and vote for local council leaders, noting this is the foundation of the country's leadership.

Mucunguzi hailed the Electoral Commission for the strategy used in the past elections, which minimised violence. He also called for the need to embrace the use of BVVK in the next elections.

Alone Turahi, chairman of Isingiro District, urged the Electoral Commission to invest much in community awareness regarding the importance of elections and also to organise induction engagement for all leaders, including LCI chairpersons.
