Janet Mbabazi has assumed the captaincy role as the senior women's cricket national team gears up for the T20 Global Qualifiers.

Mbabazi said she feels honoured to be appointed captain and she is ready for the responsibility that comes with the job.

“We have set goals as a team as we head into the global qualifiers, and want to make it to the finals, and under my stewardship, I pledge to the nation that the team will do the best,” Mbabazi said.

She stated this on Thursday at Lugogo Cricket Oval after the final squad of the team was announced by the Uganda Cricket Association.

The tournament is slated to be played in Abu Dhabi from April 23 to May 7 and Uganda is in Group A alongside Scotland, Thailand, the USA, and Sri Lanka.

Mbabazi will be deputised by Ritah Musamali and she believes she is going to follow in the footsteps of Aweko and lead the team.

“I thank Aweko for her tenure as captain, I learned a lot from her and will use this as a stepping stone for my captaincy as we plan to improve the team more,” Mbabazi emphasized.

Head coach Lawrence Ssematimba has urged the players to concentrate on the global qualifiers after a shoddy performance at the African Games.

“We have moved past the African Games and I have urged the players to give their all as we head to Abu Dhabi and make it to the finals,” Ssematimba noted,

He also confirmed that the team is going to face sides not new to them having played them at the 2018 global qualifiers in the Netherlands.

“Uganda played against Thailand and Scotland in 2018 but will be meeting USA and Sri Lanka for the 1st time and we plan to stage a master class performance against them.”

The final squad of 15 had only one change with Proscovia Alako replacing Immaculate Nandera and the rest of the players who were at the African games were retained.

The other players on the team include: Janet Mbabazi (Captain), Rita Musamali (Vice Captain), Consy Aweko, KevinAwino, Stephanie Nampiina, Immaculate Nakisuyi, Evelyn Anyipo, Sarah Akiteng, PhionahKhulume, Proscovia Alako, Gloria Obukor, Esther Iloku, Lorna Anyait, Malissa Ari under the stewardship of Lawrence Ssematimba as head coach and Deus Muhymuza as assistant coach

The team will leave Uganda on April 19, and play two warm-up games against Vanuatu and UAE before the group games.

Victoria Pearls opens its global qualifiers campaign against Scotland on April 25, USA on April 27, Thailand on April 29, and Sri Lanka on May 1.

The top two sides will qualify for the women's T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later this year.
