Wednesday: Uganda v Sri Lanka

Thailand shattered the Victoria Pearls’ chances of qualifying for their maiden T20 World Cup after securing a nine wicket win.

Uganda who lost the toss to Thailand and were forced to bowl first under the Tolerance Cricket Oval floodlights, collapsed to 62–all out in 17.4 overs.

Only three batters Rita Musamali (24), captain, Janet Mbabazi (14) and opener, Proscovia Alako (10), managed to reach double figures as Thailand’s bowlers kept making inroads.

Thailand, who are eyeing their second Women’s T20 World Cup appearance after 2020 in Australia, easily chased Victoria Pearls’ paltry score in only 11.3 overs posting 64 for the loss of one wicket, to pick their first win of the tournament after losing to Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the opener.

“We let ourselves down in our batting, and we did not perform well in bowling, we expect to do better against Sri Lanka,” a highly optimistic Victoria Pearls captain Janat Mbabazi said after the game.

Tomorrow, the Victoria Pearls face Sri Lanka at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium with their bags almost packed, as odds do not favour them in any way to advance to the semi-final.

Miracle

Even if the Pearls stun Sri Lanka, they will have to pray for Scotland to lose against Thailand and Thailand against the USA acutely.

Uganda will face Sri Lanka on Wednesday afternoon standing fourth with a poor net run rate of −2.648 incurred in the past games they have lost miserably.

Sri Lanka have won their first two games in Group A beating Scotland and Thailand by 10 wickets and 67 runs respectively.

With Uganda struggling in bowling and batting, The Lionesses will want to finish the job too early before the evening's unpredictable weather in Abu Dhabi.

Sri Lanka have not missed appearing in the T20 Women’s World Cup since 2009.

Scotland have also made their intentions clear with a second win in the group against USA before they face Thailand on Friday.

In Group B, Ireland and Netherlands are in the driving seat while Africa’s second representative in the tournament Zimbabwe is struggling to replicate the heroics displayed in Entebbe last year.

They have lost two and won one.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-final, which will give the two finalists a direct flight to the 2023 ICC T20 Women’s World Cup set for September-October in Bangladesh.
