ALEBTONG - National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi on Monday failed to hold rallies in Alebtong and Otuke districts due to impassable roads.

The NUP leader was scheduled to begin his tour in Otuke and conclude in Alebtong, but his motorcade was forced to a halt after enduring long stretches of bumpy and muddy terrain due to the rains that have been pounding the region.

Unable to reach his planned venues, Kyagulanyi resorted to brief roadside stopovers, addressing small groups of supporters along the way.

At Akura trading centre in Alebtong district, Kyagulanyi pledged to prioritise the rehabilitation of rural roads if elected President in next year’s polls.

“We will improve your roads and ensure that farmers can take their produce to markets and get better prices,” he said, after cutting short his journey to Otuke.

“We were supposed to proceed to Otuke, but as you can see, this is the only road and we cannot continue. As we have always said, roads across the country are in a sorry state,” he said, adding that the problem extends beyond Lango to regions such as Buganda, Busoga, and Karamoja.

“This is a place that also pays taxes, but you have been forgotten. To change this state of affairs, we need to unite and choose a president who can work for our generation.”

At Apala trading centre, he reiterated his message of unity and reconciliation.

“Time is gone, but I want you to know that our message is one of unity. We did not reach our destination because the roads were washed away. They have divided us, but we can join hands and end Museveni’s 40-year rule,” he said.

“When you vote, don’t only vote for me. Vote for leaders who can bring change.”
On Tuesday, Kyagulanyi is expected to campaign in Abim and Kotido districts as he begins his tour of the Karamoja region.
