Former LC5 chairperson of Iganga district, Patrick Kayemba, has been officially declared the NRM party flag bearer after winning the byelection in the 14 villages held on Monday, September 8.

Kayemba was announced the winner by the NRM electoral commission chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi, at the Iganga district headquarters. He secured 7,978 votes, narrowly defeating his closest rival, Yusuf Kyafu Ntulume, who received 7,527 votes.

Other candidates included Abdrahman Kyangha with 7,125 votes, incumbent Milton Muwuma with 5,105 votes, and Ian Waiswa with 2,956 votes.

The by-election followed a successful petition by Ntulume and Kyangha at the NRM election disputes tribunal, which had previously annulled elections in the affected villages due to various irregularities.

Kayemba thanked the voters for trusting him with their support, citing his earlier victory as a motivating factor.

However, Kyangha expressed dissatisfaction with the process, alleging irregularities in Kayemba’s stronghold villages, where all residents were allowed to vote without using the party register, unlike other areas.

He vowed to contest in the 2026 general election as an independent candidate to secure his victory.

Meanwhile, Dr Odoi reminded aggrieved parties that they may submit further petitions to the tribunal if they remain dissatisfied with the outcome.
