The Electoral Commission has warned political parties against nominating more than one candidate for the same Local Council One and LC2 positions as the country prepares for the final phase of the local council elections later this month.
The LC1, LC2 and Women Council elections are scheduled for July, with nominations currently underway and expected to close on Sunday.
Speaking in Soroti, the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Hajjat Aisha Lubega, said the Commission has registered cases where some political parties have presented two candidates for a single elective position.
She made the remarks while opening a one-day post-election stakeholders' workshop in Soroti District. The meeting brought together representatives of political parties, elected leaders, civil society organisations, the media, former election contestants and security agencies to review the recently concluded general elections.
She also addressed concerns over the continued use of the lining-up voting system in the forthcoming village elections.
Several participants argued that the method compromises voter privacy and has the potential to fuel divisions within communities.
