EC postpones LC1 polls in two Hoima villages over voter register complaints

The Electoral Commission (EC) in Hoima District has postponed Local Council One (LC1) elections in two villages to August 7, 2026, following complaints of irregularities in the voters’ register.
The complaints emerged during the Ihanga Rukanga weekend talk show on Vision Group’s Kabalega FM, where Hoima district elections administrator Hassan Takwana and his assistant Georgina Tumusiime were hosted by station manager Martin Kaahwa to discuss preparations for the July 28, 2026, LC1 elections.
During the programme on Saturday, July 25, a caller identified as Maama Daren from Busanga village in Buraru subcounty reported that several women had been unable to vote in the Women Council elections held on Thursday because their names were missing from the voters’ register despite having registered.
Following the complaints, Takwana on Sunday (July 26) visited Busanga village to meet residents and verify the concerns. However, efforts to harmonise the voters’ register and reach a consensus with residents were unsuccessful.
As a result, the Electoral Commission postponed the LC1 elections in Busanga village and Kijangi A village in Buseruka subcounty, where similar complaints about missing voter names had also been reported.
Following the complaints, Takwana on Sunday (July 26) visited Busanga village to meet residents and verify the concerns. However, efforts to harmonise the voters’ register and reach a consensus with residents were unsuccessful.
As a result, the Electoral Commission postponed the LC1 elections in Busanga village and Kijangi A village in Buseruka subcounty, where similar complaints about missing voter names had also been reported.

He added that although the pages were recovered and photocopied, they could not be used, hence the postponement of the polls.
Under the new roadmap announced by Hajj Takwana, fresh registration of voters will be conducted on July 29 and 30, display of the register will take place on July 31 and August 1, nominations will be held on August 3 and 4, while campaigns will run on August 5 and 6. Polling will then take place on August 7.
He added that although the pages were recovered and photocopied, they could not be used, hence the postponement of the polls.

Polling will then take place on August 7.
Government last week declared Tuesday (July 28) a public holiday to allow Ugandans to return to their villages and participate in the election of LC1 leaders.
