The Electoral Commission (EC) has upheld the election of Local Council 1 (LC1) chairpersons in Luwero district whose victories were being challenged by their rivals.

This was after the electoral body did not find merit in the petitions that were filed by the challengers.

The EC had received petitions from a total of 31 villages in which losing candidates complained over alleged electoral malpractices, including participation of illegal voters, use of fake voting slips, and miscounting of votes.

However, the district returning officer, Moses Ranks Kiconco, has since declared that the petitioners failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove that the results had been altered, or that the alleged electoral malpractices had denied them victory.

Kiconco said the EC only took action to overturn the election results where it found evidence of irregularities and declared two candidates it found to be the rightful winners.

In a letter that he addressed to the Luwero Chief Administrative Officer on October 26, Kiconco cleared the swearing-in of the 31 LC1 winners whose swearing-in ceremonies had been suspended pending a review of the complaints, which had been filed by the petitioners.

Meanwhile, the EC has nullified the election in Degeya Central Village near Bombo town in Katikamu South and directed that a fresh election be conducted.

The electoral body is, however, yet to rule on petitions that were received from seven other villages.
