Buganda NRM cadres back Museveni, call for more services

The leaders also raised concerns about the exploitation of local residents by moneylenders, who allegedly confiscate borrowers’ National Identity Cards, a practice they said has led to some people disappearing after failing to recover their IDs.

KYANKWANZI - National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in the Buganda region have pledged their unwavering support for President Yoweri Museveni in the upcoming 2026 general elections and urged the government to continue delivering services to local communities.

The declaration was made at Butemba playground in Kyankwanzi district during a campaign event dubbed Buganda for Museveni.

The event was organised by Butemba County MP Patrick Bingi Nyanzi alongside Kyankwanzi district Woman MP Christine Bukenya Sendawula.

MP Nyanzi highlighted several issues affecting the area, including land grabbing, both by the National Forestry Authority (NFA) and individuals allegedly acting with impunity, as well as the destruction of crops by stray animals, inconsistent power supply, and delays in implementing government programmes.

"Our people in Kyankwanzi are facing challenges which we believe contributed to the loss of some positions in the last general elections," he said.

Nyanzi was joined by MP Bukenya, who called on the government to upgrade the district’s health facilities to Health Centre IV status to bring medical services closer to the communities.

The leaders also raised concerns about the exploitation of local residents by moneylenders, who allegedly confiscate borrowers’ National Identity Cards, a practice they said has led to some people disappearing after failing to recover their IDs.

Bukenya pledged that, alongside other NRM leaders, she would continue to support and strengthen the party ahead of the 2026 polls.

Responding to the concerns, Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka issued a stern warning to moneylenders operating in Kyankwanzi.

"I have given the moneylenders in Kyankwanzi one week to return people’s identity cards. If they fail to comply, their licences will be revoked," he said.

He also pledged to deploy government lawyers to assist bibanja landowners involved in prolonged court battles, ensuring they receive the justice they deserve.

Kiryowa expressed confidence that with the government addressing these concerns, the NRM would secure all contested positions in the upcoming elections.

The event was attended by energy minister Ruth Nankabirwa, Lwengo district Woman MP Cissy Namujju, Kasambya County MP David Kabanda, and other party leaders.

To cap the day, singer Stabua Natooro performed a series of songs, including one composed in honour of President Museveni.
