Besigye-Saleh’s intermittent relationship since NRA war
In the second year of the NRA war, Saleh nearly lost his life while battling the then government forces, Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA), at Bukalabi in Nakaseke. He was shot three times in the arms, and his jacket sustained eighteen bullet holes. Besigye treated him before he received additional treatment elsewhere. And by 1984, Saleh had fully recovered, to the extent of commanding successful battles in Masindi, Kabamba, Mubende, Katonga, Masaka, Mbarara and Kampala.
Gen. Saleh said: “Museveni is my brother, but he has fired me twice from the army. The first reason was because I slept in a disco. You can imagine such a reason.” For the position of army commander, Saleh was replaced with Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, at the time when Col. Dr Kizza Besigye was the Minister of State in the Office of the President and also National Political Commissar.
