All is set for the inauguration of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) as a new political party, Tuesday, July 8, 2025, with its kingpin, Dr Kizza Besigye, delivering a keynote address from Luzira Maximum Security Prison in Kampala.

“For the first time, you will witness a prisoner deliver a keynote address from prison. Dr Besigye will speak during our party’s official inauguration. Come and listen to him,” acting PFF party spokesperson and Kira Municipality Member of Parliament Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, said.

He added that over 1,000 delegates are expected to attend the launch at the party’s headquarters on Katonga Road in Kampala.

“They will represent over 5,000 members who appended their signatures on the application to register this party. So, it is a big day to formally inaugurate and present PFF to the country,” Ssemujju said.

Besigye and his long-time friend, Hajji Obeid Lutale, were arrested in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on November 16 last year, where they had reportedly gone to attend an event organised by Kenya’s opposition politician Martha Karua.

They were subsequently brought home and charged with several firearms and security-related offences at the General Court Martial, which later remanded them to Luzira Prison.

In April, they both filed a fresh application before the High Court in Kampala, seeking release on bail pending trial for treason charges.

Ssemujju noted that they received the certificate of registration on June 5, 2025.

“So, the interim leadership has a duty to present to the country the [new] party; who we are, what we intend to do, the objectives and the constitution,” he stated.

He also said they will use the occasion to present for approval the names of the leaders of the PFF, and thereafter, the new leadership will be sworn in to assume leadership immediately.

“We will have the regional and the sub-regional conferences to follow at which regional, sub-regional and district leadership will also be inaugurated,” he added.

Major milestone

On May 16, 2025, the promoters of PFF, who broke away from the Forum for Democratic Change party, were delighted that the Electoral Commission finally gazetted their brainchild as a political party.

This was seen as a major milestone in the faction’s quest to register PFF as a political party and use it as a vehicle to run campaigns in the 2026 general election.

The registered political parties in Uganda are now 27.
