28-year-old elected LC1 chairperson of VP Alupo’s village

KATAKWI - Twenty-eight-year-old Samuel Okameri of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has been elected the new Local Council One (LC1) chairperson of Oigo-Imomwa village in Ongongoja subcounty, Katakwi district, the village of Vice President Jessica Alupo.
Gerald Ojur, the village election officer for Oigo-Imomwa, announced Okameri’s victory on July 28, 2026, after he secured 141 votes, defeating his opponent Joseph Elangot, an independent candidate, who received five votes.
Okameri, who was elected three years ago as the village chairperson for food security, takes over from Richard Ogero, who served as chairperson for 15 years.
In his new role, Okameri appointed James Peter Obwangor (NRM), a former challenger in the party primaries, as his vice chairperson, while Isaac Opio was appointed NRM general secretary for children affairs.
Okameri expressed pride in serving as the LC1 chairperson of the Vice President’s village and pledged to work with her for the development of the area.
During her attendance at the LC1 elections, Vice President Alupo encouraged unsuccessful candidates to maintain peace and harmony for the development of the village.
She shared lessons from her own electoral experience, emphasising the importance of cooperation despite competition.

“Emulate the way Charles Alongu and I, whom I defeated in the NRM village structures elections as the chairperson of the veterans league in the village on May 6th, have coexisted peacefully,” Alupo advised.
In Serere district, Richard Olupot, the NRM candidate, secured 199 votes, defeating his competitor, Nakalet Apeto, a pastor from the Pentecostal Assemblies of God who contested as an independent, who received 84 votes in Ongia Cell of Kitedok town council.
Presiding officer Charles Oler declared Olupot the winner, a result he also achieved during the NRM party primaries, where he had the support of former LC5 chairperson Joseph Opit Okojo.
Meanwhile, in Katakwi district, returning officer Stephen Makubuya reported that only a few cases were recorded during elections in the 629 villages across the district, which had 73,809 voters.
In Amolatar district, returning officer Irene Hope Nakiru said more than 54,900 voters were registered in 581 villages.
She said there was notable excitement around the elections, with each village having between four and five candidates.
Although some delays in voter turnout were reported due to farming activities, many residents later moved to polling stations to vote.
Police patrolled the area from the previous evening to prevent any possible violence.
The term of office for the current office holders (LCs 1 and 2), who were elected on July 10, 2018, officially ended in 2023, but the Government extended their mandate due to budget constraints.
