Kakise bus driver dies days after road crash in Soroti

SOROTI — Kakise Bus Company driver Alfred Ekongo has died at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where he had been admitted since Saturday following a road crash.
The bus company's management announced his death on Wednesday evening (July 22), describing it as a great loss to the company and the transport industry.
Ekongo, a senior driver with Kakise Bus Company from Ngora district, sustained critical injuries after the bus he was driving overturned at about 11:30pm on Saturday, July 18, at Television Centre trading area along the Soroti–Mbale highway in Soroti City.
Sixteen of the 67 passengers on board were injured and were taken to hospital for treatment. The bus, registration number UAS 159P, was travelling from Soroti to Kampala when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian who suddenly crossed the road.

Police identified the pedestrian as Ibrahim Etwau, 25, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Ekongo hailed from Nyamongo Oledai Village in Ngora Town Council.
In a statement, Kakise Bus Company described Ekongo as a pillar of strength, wisdom and humility. The company said he dedicated his life to serving customers with compassion and professionalism and was admired by colleagues, family and the wider community. It added that he leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, laughter and inspiration that will continue to be remembered by all who knew him.
Ekongo's death comes at a time when the country is mourning four other people who died in a separate road crash along the Kampala–Masaka highway last night. Since July 7 to July 21, different road crashes, mostly involving school children, have left 45 people across the country dead, with several being admitted in various hospitals. The most fatal accident happened last Thursday, and it involved pupils of King David Junior School. The accident occurred after the school bus in which they were travelling lost control at Kaserem along the Kapchorwa–Mbale Road, leaving 23 children and their school director dead.
