Police in Nakawa division have launched an investigation into a sudden death incident at Abala Motel in Butabika, Kampala district, where a 28-year-old woman reportedly died after slipping in the bathroom.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, confirmed the incident, which occurred on the morning of June 29, 2025.

“Preliminary findings indicate that on June 29, 2025, at around 5:30am, one Anthony Beebwa checked into Abala Motel in Butabika, Nakawa Division, with his girlfriend, only identified as Shamia, aged approximately 28 years,” Owoyesigyire said.

“Later, at around 9:00am, while the two were in the room, Shamia reportedly went to take a bath. Unfortunately, she slipped and fell in the bathroom, dying instantly.”

He said a team comprising the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), homicide detectives, and the Officer-in-Charge of Butabika Police Station, responded to the scene, documented it, and conveyed the body to the city mortuary.

“The case has been recorded under reference SD 06/29/06/2025 for further inquiry,” Owoyesigyire added.

While preliminary signs suggest an accidental fall, detectives say they are treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves as investigations continue to determine the exact cause of death. As a result, Police have detained Beebwa pending ongoing investigations.

The incident comes just days after Police launched a parallel investigation into the sudden and mysterious death of Dr John Bosco Spire Kiggundu, a renowned gynaecologist and founder of Henrob Laparoscopy Hospital in Zzana, Wakiso district.

Kiggundu was found dead on Sunday, June 22, 2025, inside Room 111 of Dream Guest House in KKB Zone, Bweya Ward, Kajjansi Town Council, Wakiso District, under unclear circumstances.

According to a Police report filed under Kajjansi SD 51/22/06/2025, the 52-year-old surgeon checked in alone at around 5:35pm on Saturday, June 21, in his black BMW, registration number UBA 547E.

Just 10 minutes later, CCTV footage captured an unidentified woman entering the same room. She was seen leaving at approximately 6:52pm with a black plastic bag.

“The presence of the woman, her short stay, and the removal of the bag are now central leads in the investigation,” said a homicide officer close to the probe, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.

Police confirmed there were no physical injuries observed on the doctor’s body, which was recovered the next day.

Meanwhile, Jim Spire Ssentongo, a brother to the late doctor, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to clarify circulating rumours about the cause of his brother’s death.

“Though it may not be the right time amidst grieving, I just want to dispel the harmful disinformation circulating around Dr. John Spire Kiggundu’s sudden death,” he wrote.

“It is not true that he was shot and dumped in a trench. He was not kidnapped. It is not true that he was killed for political or other reasons. The post-mortem report—credibly done—shows he died of a heart attack and was only found a day later. Kindly disregard the disinformation that may cause unnecessary harm and hatred to others. Let John rest.”
