Police in the East Kyoga region have arrested a 38-year-old woman for allegedly stealing a three-month-old baby boy.
SSP Richard Musisi, the deputy regional police commander of East Kyoga, identified the suspect as Brenda Amongin.
She is alleged to have stolen the baby from Kireka in Kampala and boarded a bus to Soroti on Tuesday this week, where she was found with the child around Goal Man Supermarket in Soroti city.
"This suspect happens to be a 'cousin-sister' to the mother of the baby, and it is alleged that she went to Kampala to pick her national ID. In due course, she picked the baby from her sister to use the baby to quickly get her national ID from the national ID centre in Kampala," said Musisi.
"Immediately after, she did not take the baby back to its mother but instead travelled straight from Kampala to Teso here."
Musisi said they have since reported the case to Kireka Police Station.
The suspect is currently in police custody, and the baby has since been taken to Amecet Children's Home for proper care.
Simon Orugon, a social worker at the facility, confirmed that the baby is with them and will be reunited with his parents.
