Uganda Netball Federation president Sarah Babirye Kityo and a businessperson Zainab Namutebi have been sent to Luzira prison on allegations of obtaining money by false pretences.

On Monday at the Buganda Road court, the former youth Member of Parliament was arraigned before First Grade Magistrate Seyna Owomugisha on the accusation of obtaining money from the complainants Sarah Wamala and Gloria Kikomeko.

The two contend that they each gave Babirye sh8m after she promised to take them to the United States of America, which they say never happened. They allege that this happened in May 2022 in Kampala.

Other two alleged victims who preferred anonymity told Vision Sport outside court that they were also defrauded of millions by the accused and want justice to be served.

“We want the law to take its course and Babirye and Namutebi should not be granted bail unless they take full account of what they did,” she said.

Babirye’s latest woes come on the back of her being asked to step aside from her role as UNF president pending investigations into the misappropriation of government funds meant for the men’s national team (the Rock).

That has caused her and NCS to appear before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament to answer queries on sh100m that were not properly accounted for.

Babirye and her co-accused will return to court on Wednesday for a bail hearing.
