West Ankole bishop announces transfers, appoints new cathedral dean
The transfers were announced during the first sitting of the newly constituted Diocesan Council for the 2026–2030 term at Bweranyangi Hill on Friday.

The Bishop of West Ankole Diocese, Johnson Twinomujuni, has announced several clergy transfers, including the appointment of Ven. Rev. Can. Richard Mubangizi as the new dean of St Peter’s Cathedral.
The transfers were announced during the first sitting of the newly constituted Diocesan Council for the 2026–2030 term at Bweranyangi Hill on Friday.
Rev. Jonas Owoyesiga was transferred from Kabiira Town Church to Butsibo Parish, while Rev. Godfrey Barekye moved from the Bishop’s Office to Kabiira Town Church.
Rev. Amon Tusiime was transferred from Butsibo Parish to Kaburengye Parish while Rev. Able Nabasa Murangira moved from Kaburengye Parish to Kashenshero Archdeaconry as Archdeacon.
Ven. Rev. John Namanya Makuru was transferred from St Peter’s Cathedral to All Saints Greater Bushenyi Archdeaconry, while Ven. Rev. Didas Natweta moved from All Saints Greater Bushenyi to Kabwohe Archdeaconry.
Rev. Can. Benon Muhwezi was placed on sick leave from Kabwohe Archdeaconry while Ven. Rev. Can. Richard Mubangizi was transferred from Kashenshero Archdeaconry to St Peter’s Cathedral as Dean.
During the meeting, council members commended Bishop Twinomujuni for transforming Bweranyangi Hill.
The commendation followed a tour of ongoing construction works at the Convention Grounds and St Peter’s Cathedral.
The council was constituted following the formation of a new synod, which also resulted in the formation of new boards and committees.
While chairing the meeting, Bishop Twinomujuni thanked the council members, secretariat, archdeacons, clergy, lay readers, chaplains, Mothers’ Union, Fathers’ Union, youth, children, headteachers, teachers, principals, staff, church wardens, parish and sub-parish leaders, choirs, Christians, the business community and government for their support to the Church.
He said the diocese was in a healthy state, citing relative peace and stability, continuity in spreading the Gospel and Christian teachings, and remuneration of ministers and church workers.
He also cited increased enrolment at Ankole Western University, growth of Jubilee SACCO, expansion of Katungu Hospital and renovation of diocesan offices, among other projects being implemented across archdeaconries, parishes, schools and institutions.
Twinomujuni commended the St Peter’s Cathedral construction committee, chaired by commissioner Winstone Katushabe, architect Richard Mashanyu, the contractor, and everyone involved in the rebuilding project.
He also thanked individuals, families, churches, institutions and groups that have contributed towards the works, which have progressed over the past 10 months.
The bishop appealed for more support towards the project, saying the diocese had scheduled major fundraising events to support the ongoing works, including Women’s Sunday on August 30, Men’s Sunday on September 20 and a grand Thanksgiving and fundraising event on October 25.
The council also formed and ratified several boards and committees, including Finance, Health, Education, Lands and Estates, Household and Community Transformation, Planning and Development, Mission, Information and Communication, and the Cathedral Chapter.
The Diocesan Nominations Committee was also constituted, comprising the diocesan chancellor, five clergy, three youths, three women and three men.
The Cathedral Rebuilding Committee, Verification Committee, and Projects and Investments Committee were also ratified.
