In a bid to maintain the integrity and public trust associated with the Police uniform, authorities have sounded the alarm over a concerning trend of its manipulation by various groups and individuals.

The misuse of Police attire, including rank insignia and accoutrements, has raised serious concerns about public safety and the potential for misrepresentation, according to Police.

Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson, says the Police uniform stands as a recognisable symbol of authority and protection, providing reassurance to the public and aiding in the identification of law enforcement officials.

However, recent instances of unauthorised adoption of Police uniforms by private security organisations, bouncers associations, political groups and individuals have sparked alarm within law enforcement circles.

“These groups and individuals have been observed donning police uniforms in unauthorized configurations, such as the darker black attire associated with counter-terrorism units or the khaki uniforms worn by general duty officers,” he says.

He adds that such unauthorised use is seen as an attempt to project an authoritarian and militaristic image, often with the intention of conveying a more aggressive message to the public.

Authorities have emphasized that this practice is illegal and must be halted immediately.

According to Enanga, efforts to address this issue have already begun, with authorities confiscating items such as high visibility vests, jackets, sunglasses, and black attire from bouncers and private security organisations.

He says these measures aim to prevent the misrepresentation of these groups as militaristic or combat-oriented, which could potentially influence public perceptions inappropriately.

Enanga made the remarks on Monday, April 21, 2024, while addressing journalists at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.

He was providing updates linked to insecurity and crackdowns by Police and sister security agencies.
