Vice President Jessica Alupo Epel has applauded the Chinese government for its continued support to Uganda, particularly in empowering youth through skills training.
Alupo made the remarks during a graduation ceremony for 150 youths who completed a three-month technical training programme at institutions across the region.
She praised Uganda’s strong diplomatic ties with countries like China and Japan, noting their contributions in rehabilitating schools and supporting youth skilling initiatives.
The Vice President urged parents to support their children in acquiring hands-on skills, even those who hold degrees, emphasising that practical knowledge is key in today’s job market.
During the event, Alupo handed over 130 sewing machines and 20 jet-washing machines to the graduates, who had received training in garment cutting, design, and car washing. She confirmed the equipment was donated by the Chinese Embassy.
The Chinese Deputy Ambassador to Uganda, Fan Xuecheng, who also attended, praised Alupo for her dedication to the people of Katakwi and pledged continued cooperation and support from the Chinese government.
Several graduates expressed heartfelt gratitude for the training opportunity. Esther Molly Amuge, a single mother trained in garment design at St. Kizito Technical Institute in Soroti city, said Alupo’s intervention had given her hope and a fresh start.
Nelson Omuna, who trained in car washing, thanked the Vice President for recognising and supporting them. He called on her to extend similar opportunities to other struggling youth in rural areas.
Katakwi deputy RDC, Xavier Okwii, commended the graduates for embracing the programme. He noted that such initiatives help reduce crime and urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the donated equipment.
Katakwi district female youth councillor, Irene Alungat, said the training would foster a culture of entrepreneurship among the youth and encouraged beneficiaries to share their skills with others.
In her closing remarks, VP Alupo rallied the people of Katakwi and the wider Teso sub-region to continue supporting youth empowerment initiatives for a brighter future.
