Vice President of Uganda Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo has joined mourners at Karuzika Royal Palace in Fort Portal to condole with the people of Tooro following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Addressing mourners at the palace on Sunday (September 6), Alupo said Omukama Oyo contributed to the socio-economic transformation of communities through youth empowerment.
"Omukama Oyo promoted tourism, health, environment and youth empowerment; he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire the people of Tooro," Alupo said.
The condolence visit comes as the remains of King Oyo lie in state at Karuzika Royal Palace, where hundreds of mourners have been turning up to view the body and pay their final respects.
The viewing is part of the traditional nine-day mourning period that began when the king's body arrived at the palace on Friday. Oyo will be buried on September 12 at the Karambi Royal Tombs, on the 31st anniversary of his coronation.
Gender and Culture state minister Mary Kamuli Kuteesa appealed to the people of Tooro to remain united and allow the royal family and the entire nation to mourn the king.
Kamuli advised the people to leave the issue of succession to the few individuals selected by the royal family to handle.
"As government, we are appealing to our people to let the royal clan handle the issue of succession. At the right time, they will inform us who the next king will be. That part is for them; let us avoid social media," Kamuli said.
