KAMPALA - Uganda’s Vice President Maj. (rtd) Jessica Alupo has pledged loyalty, unity, and renewed focus on poverty eradication after Parliament overwhelmingly approved her appointment for a second term in office.

Alupo thanked President Yoweri Museveni, Members of Parliament and the people of Katakwi District for entrusting her with the country’s second-highest office.

Members of Parliament (MPs) on Thursday, May 28, 2026, approved  Alupo to serve a second term as Vice President of Uganda.

Speaking shortly after her approval, Alupo thanked President Museveni for entrusting her with the position once again and promised to serve the country with loyalty, commitment, and dedication, as well as ensure unity and support for government poverty eradication programmes.

“I assure him and all people of Uganda that I shall serve with utmost dedication and loyalty, giving undivided attention to all matters of national importance that come before me during my tenure,” Alupo said.

She called for cooperation between the Executive and Parliament, saying teamwork was necessary for effective service delivery and national development.

“In service to the people of Uganda as Vice President, I promise you that I will not abuse your trust. When we work as a team, we accomplish our assignments very fast, very well and very easily. In the execution of my mandate, however, I request for your support and a warm working relationship from each and every member of this house, because when we work as a team, we accomplish our assignments very fast, well, and easily,”  said Alupo.

She quoted Psalm 133: 1 that states: “How good, how delightful it is to live as brothers and sisters all together”. Alupo urged MPs to support government efforts aimed at transforming households still outside the money economy through poverty alleviation programmes.

She said Uganda’s development agenda should focus on villages, parishes, sub-counties and districts to ensure ordinary citizens benefit from economic growth.

The Vice President appealed to Parliament to strengthen its oversight role while maintaining close engagement with communities across the country.

Alupo congratulated Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa upon assuming the leadership of the 12th Parliament, describing the Speaker as a leader with experience and humour, who contributed greatly during Cabinet discussions.

She pledged full cooperation with Parliament and urged leaders to focus on issues that unite Ugandans rather than divide them.

“The opportunity has been bestowed upon us by the people of Uganda to serve them. Let us endeavour to do our level best,” Alupo said.

Sheema South MP, Ephraim Kamuntu, who doubles as the newly-elected Internal Affairs minister, moved the motion seeking Parliament’s approval of Alupo’s appointment by President Museveni.
