NUP re-appoints Ssenyonyi as leader of opposition

Ssenyonyi, who has been the LOP in the 11th Parliament, has been credited for leading the opposition well in the House.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has re-appointed Nakawa West Member of Parliament (MP) Joel Ssenyonyi as the Leader of Opposition (LOP) in the 12th Parliament.

Ssenyonyi, who has been the LOP in the 11th Parliament, has been credited for leading the opposition well in the House.

According to a statement from NUP, the Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) will be chaired by Kyadondo East MP Muwada Nkunyingi and deputised by Kira municipality MP George Musisi.

Manjiya County MP John Baptist Nambeshe has been named a commissioner of Parliament, while the Jinja South East MP, Paul Mwiru, has been named the opposition chief whip. Mwiru will be deputised by Kayunga woman MP Harriet Nakwedde.

The party has also named Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake as the head of the Government Assurance Committee, and he will be deputised by Soroti Woman MP Anna Adeke Ebaju.

The Public Accounts Committee will be led by Kassanda North MP Patrick Nsamba Oshabe, who will be deputised by Jinja City woman MP Sarah Lwansasula.

Mukono municipality MP Betty Nambooze will head the local government committee, and she will be deputised by Iganga Municipality MP Abed Nasser Mudiobole.

There are 529 MPs elected to the 12th parliament, with NUP having the majority number of members in the opposition.

Of these, 372 members belong to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), NUP has 50 MPs, Uganda People's Congress (UPC) 11 MPs, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) eight MPs, Democratic Party (DP) six MPs, People's Front for Freedom (PFF) two MPs, and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) one MP.

There are 68 independent MPs, many of whom are considered sympathetic to the ruling NRM party.
