The Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) national ball games got to an official opening today in a ceremony at Kakyela Stadium.

The event started with a match by the primary school athletes who matched from Kakyeka Stadium through Kamukuzi and back to Kakyeka with the help of Mbarara traffic police and a local band.

While speaking at the event, UPSSA president Pauline Musigire requested the revision of the primary school sports calendar, to separate Music Dance and Drama (MDD) Ball games, which happen at the same time.

The ball games are happening, for the first time, in partnership with Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Associations (USSSA), which has come in to facilitate capacity building to the primary school teachers and online registration of the primary school kids.

“We are happy as USSSA to have been welcomed into the primary school sports to combine effort for the talent identification and development from the grassroots,” Said USSSA 3rd vice president Harriet Apolot.

Mbarara City Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Robert Kanusu, who represented the RCC in the guest of honour’s capacity, welcomed the visitors to the city and thanked the ministry through the UPSSA for choosing Mbarara City as host.

“You are most welcome to our city for this national event. Sports promotes tourism and is a major avenue for athletes to earn money and other opportunities," he said.

Before the opening ceremony, there were morning games in netball, handball, volleyball, and football for both boys and girls in all the three age categories of U12, U14, and U16, and action continues tomorrow Thursday.
