Fan violence was non-existent during the Mbarara City secondary school football competitions that climaxed on Friday at UPDF division II Makenke grounds.

This came about after organizers of Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Mbarara City in conjunction with the Association of Secondary Schools Head Teachers of Uganda (ASSHU) Mbarara City agreed to have all games over the two days held inside the army barracks.

“We decided after coming together with the head teachers and the UPDF after having gone through the past experiences during these games and we are happy that we held the games successfully. We shall meet again as stakeholders and review the event from where we shall draw plans for future competition handling,” said Hajji Ismail Kyoma, one of the members of the organizing committee.

The competition that attracted eight boys teams and eight girls teams that had qualified from the four zones A, B, C, and D including Ntare School, Mbarara High, Welden School, Mbarara SS, and Mbarara Army School, among others, climaxed with no skirmishes and even when Mbarara High School beat Ntare school 1-0 to advance to the semifinals, the situation remained calm.

It was only Abdurazak Nsubuga, one of the technical staff members on the Nyamitanga SS team who during their semifinal against hosts Mbarara Army school, got caught up in a fracas with the officers in uniform and apprehended, but this only was temporally.

Welden School went on to beat Nyamitanga SS 3-0 in the finals to retain the boys’ accolade while Nana High School beat Maryhill High School 2-0 to win their maiden girls' title.

The top 8 boys and girls teams qualified to represent Mbarara City at the USSSA Ankole zone championship due April 4-11 at St John Fisher Ibanda SS.
