Police in West Nile have recorded a case involving the abduction of a UPDF soldier, along with his firearm containing 120 rounds of ammunition, a boat, and an engine.
According to West Nile Police spokesperson Collins Asea, the soldier, Private Edwin Chelimo, was abducted on May 14, 2025, at approximately 4:30 a.m.
Asea said that on the day of the incident, a group of UPDF personnel from Panyimur town council, led by Corporal Paul Ssemugenyi, were conducting routine patrols targeting illegal fishing activities in the areas of Kabolwa and Bugoigoi.
He said that during their return to Deyi Landing Site, they encountered an armed ambush allegedly laid by approximately eight members of the DR Congo army, who were equipped with two support weapons and AK-47 rifles.
The suspects reportedly retreated into the Congolese side with the victim.
Asea noted that the incident was reported under SD reference 03/14/05/2025 at Panyimur Police Station.
He added that investigations have commenced to ensure the safe recovery of the abducted officer and to identify the perpetrators.
Police have appealed to the public and relevant authorities to remain vigilant and to share any information that may aid in the soldier’s rescue.
