UN set to establish global fleet hub in Kampala

On Wednesday, Uganda and WFP signed the amendment to the MoU, authorising the deployment of special UN/WFP fleet plates that allow vehicles to operate seamlessly across borders without the delays of country-by-country re-registration.

Uganda and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have reinforced the  Memorandum of Understanding establishing Kampala as the home of the WFP Global Fleet Hub, a continental centre for rapid humanitarian response.

On Wednesday, Uganda and WFP signed the amendment to the MoU, authorising the deployment of special UN/WFP fleet plates that allow vehicles to operate seamlessly across borders without the delays of country-by-country re-registration. 

This development, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is expected to shorten emergency response times across the region greatly.

During the signing ceremony at  Commonwealth Resort in Munyonyo, Ambassador Charles Ssentongo,  Chief of Protocol, who  represented MoFA hailed the establishment of the Global Fleet Hub, which he said presents new employment and skills-development opportunities for Ugandans, while enhancing Uganda’s role as a key logistics and Humanitarian Coordination Centre for Africa.

Commending WFP for its continued role in facilitating humanitarian assistance in Uganda and across the region, he applauded UN agencies for their unwavering support to vulnerable communities.

Sentongo reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to strengthening multilateral humanitarian action and deepening collaboration with partners to enhance regional stability and resilience.
