The Uganda Management Institute (UMI) has appointed former internal affairs ministry permanent secretary Eng. Dr Steven Paul Kagoda as governing council chairperson.

Kagoda, a former lecturer at Makerere University, replaces Francis Lubanga who has been serving in a similar capacity since 2015.

UMI chancellor and former Chief Justice Bart Katureebe while speaking at Kagoda's installation dinner at Hotel Golden Tulip Canaan Kampala, welcomed the appointment saying that the institution needed more experienced leaders who have served in different capacities to elevate its status.

“I have worked with Dr Kagoda at Makerere before and became a permanent member when I was serving as the Chief Justice and I trust him as a person who is incorruptible, honest and straightforward,” Katureebe said.

I call upon you to guide this institution, live up to the vision and the mission and I do not want to hear about exam cheating and expired courses during your tenure because this has shocked the nation, he added.

Kagoda said that for the first two months, he has been going through induction to know more about the culture and values of the institution.

“I used to hear very little about UMI and that indicated that everything was well with the institution and I want to commend my superiors for all the achievements registered,” he added.

“If the institute performs better all of us will claim that success and I need support from each one of you to take this institution forward,” Kagoda said.

UMI is a national branch for training, research and consultancy in the field of administration, leadership and management.

Officially opened on October 7, 1969, as the Institute Public Administration (IPA), the institute was mandated to conduct intensive in-service training to quickly develop management capacity in the public service.
