26th September 2024

“It is unbecoming of any member of the legal profession to use foul language and insult others. We condemn the use of derogatory language by one of the aspirants and we disassociate ourselves from it,” Tumukunde said.

Tumukunde, also the brains behind the Young Lawyers Network, said even if someone has issues with the modus operandi of those in authority, they can iron out them without making individual attacks or insults.

KAMPALA - The Uganda Law Society (ULS) presidential aspirants and members of the legal profession have been urged to uphold decorum, a core principle on which the prestigious legal profession thrives.

A group of lawyers, led by Tony Tumukunde, made the call during a media briefing at Fairway Hotel in Kampala on September 25, 2024.

“It is unbecoming of any member of the legal profession to use foul language and insult others. We condemn the use of derogatory language by one of the aspirants and we disassociate ourselves from it,” Tumukunde said.

Tumukunde begged the members of the legal profession not to vote for the candidate who he said his video clips insulting Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, Principal Judge Dr Flavian Zeija and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo, among others, have since gone viral on social media and thus in the public domain of every lawyer.

“I request the members of the legal fraternity not to vote for the candidate who has no respect for others because the public is keenly watching us. If you insult the Attorney General (head of the Bar), Chief Justice (head of the Judiciary), the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), then who will you work with?” Tumukunde said.

Tumukunde, also the brains behind the Young Lawyers Network, said even if someone has issues with the modus operandi of those in authority, they can iron out them without making individual attacks or insults.

Frank Ddungu Kavuma said a leader who insults others should not be elected as the Uganda Law Society president.

Three candidates are vying for the seat. They are Isaac Atukunda, Kenneth Kipaalu and Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde. The elections are slated for this Saturday at Commonwealth Speke Resort in Munyonyo in Kampala.
