MBARARA - The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has equipped districts and cities' commercial officers in the western region with skills to support indigenous Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), guiding them on product certification and quality standards.

The three-day training held at Rwizi Arch Hotel in Mbarara City kicked off on Tuesday and attracted participants from the districts of Western region.

According to Abubaker Bakulumpagi, the Principal Certification Officer, UNBS (MSMEs), the training focused on empowering officers to be good ambassadors in enforcing standards by protecting dangerous and substandard products.

“The objective of this engagement is to empower commercial officers with knowledge regarding the standards and compliance requirements for enterprises to national standards,” Bakulumpagi stated.

He also expressed hope that at the end of the training, officers will come up with a framework on how they can work together with UNBS to ensure MSMEs in Uganda are supported and registered.

Bakulumpagi urged MSMEs to comply with the requirements of the standards, noting that in terms of the economy, they contribute greatly to the GDP of the country, provide majority of the employment to Ugandans and provide goods and services.

“They have a number of challenges; the majority of them are acting informally, and we don’t know where they are located. Bearing that in mind, because of their importance, we have to ensure we support them,” he added.
