In a bid to strengthen the China-Uganda ties, the consulate in Guangzhou and the Embassy of Uganda in Beijing have hosted a celebration of Uganda's 63rd Independence Day anniversary.
Head of mission at the embassy, Oliver Wonekha and Consul General of Uganda in Guangzhou, covering the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan and Guangxi, Judyth Nsababera welcomed Amb. Lei Kezhong, African diplomats, the Ugandan diaspora and Chinese investors.
The reception promoted international collaboration by bringing together African diplomats in China, foreign mission leaders, international organisation representatives, the Ugandan diaspora, and key Chinese investors interested in Uganda, according to social media posts dated October 12, 2025, from the two entities.
National celebrations
Uganda officially held its Independence Day anniversary celebrations on October 9 at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala. The event was presided over by President Yoweri Museveni.
During the event, 23 distinguished persons, whose services to Uganda have been extraordinary, were honoured with prestigious medals.
President Yoweri Museveni presented the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer) medal, the National Independence Diamond Jubilee medals, and the Nalubaale medals.
Trade relations improve
During the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation Ministerial Conference held in the Chinese city of Changsha in June this year, Beijing announced a 100% tariff exemption for all exports from African countries with diplomatic ties with China.
As a result, Uganda’s exports to China, according to the Chinese Embassy in Kampala, surpassed $84m (about shillings 293 billion) by July 2025, registering a remarkable 97.8% year-on-year hike.
Coffee exports to China alone, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhanga Lizhong said recently, surged by 150%, and products like cotton bear duty-free access under China’s zero-tariff policy.
“Strengthened by people-to-people bonds, the friendship between our nations continues to thrive. Over the past 40 years, China has sent more than 200 medical workers to Uganda, offering essential care to countless patients,” Zhang said.
For 11 years, the ambassador said the Confucius Institute at Makerere University has facilitated cultural and language exchange.
