Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) President Salim Uhuru is confident the 2024 Africa Boxing Union (ABU) convention will help to improve the technical aspect of all stakeholders in the sport countrywide.
Uganda will host this year’s ABU convention at Hotel Africana in Kampala between August 18-23, the third time in history and the second under Salim Uhuru's leadership.
To Uhuru whose leadership first hosted the ABU Convention in 2018, hosting such an international event is a blessing to the country and just shows how the continent trusts Uganda’s stake in Africa boxing.
“We are blessed to host the ABU convention for a second time in a space of six years. This event will greatly impact the country economically, socially and technically” Uhuru told Vision Sport.
“I commend President Museveni and Mama Janet who have been economically behind us to organise this event. I also thank Uganda Wild Life Authority and General Salim Saleh and St Mary’s SS Kitende, Hardware World for the support.”
The event will attract over seventy ABU delegates from different African countries.
World Boxing Council (WBC) vice-president who is also ABU president, Tunisia’s Houcine Houichi will lead the contingent.
Uganda’s Moureen Mulangira, the first ABU female General Secretary and UPBC’s treasurer, says the convention will also boost Uganda’s tourism sector and revenue.
That the over seventy delegates will splash their dollars within the five-day convention.
“The convention will come along with a two-day technical seminar. WBC has sent an Italian instructor to train our referees and judges, boxing agents, managers and promoters. It will also impact our tourism sector and revenue."
The event will climax with seven professional bouts lined up on the menu with super middleweight John Sserunjogi ‘JST’ battling Egyptian Ahmed Borishe for a marathon 12 rounds for the ABU Africa title.
Of the six undercard thrillers, Katwe Lipanda’s Kamada Ntege ‘Sure Fire’ will defend his ABU East And Central Africa middleweight title against Tanzania’s David Mwita Mgaya.
Joshua Nyanzi ‘Spider’ the newly crowned national welterweight king takes on Junjju Power in a blockbuster fight as Cruiserweight Abdul Njego takes on Cameroon’s Merlin Tamba.
