Ugandans in Canada's most populous city Toronto turned up in large numbers to witness the raising of the Uganda flag at the City Hall for the first time to mark the east African nation’s 63rd independence anniversary.

Toronto city was represented by Councilor Chris Moise, who hailed the Ugandan community for the immense contribution to the development of Toronto, reiterating the country's slogan "Our Diversity Our Strength" and pledged to support the raising of the Uganda flag every year.

Amb. Helen Kayiza, who represented the High Commission, urged Ugandans to unite more for effective mobilization and congratulated the organizers upon the successful maiden event.

The Ugandan community applauded the effort by the High Commission to support diaspora activities through the stewardship of Amb. Allan Kajik, the charge' d'affaires.

Relatedly, miles away from Canada, the Uganda community in South Sudan also celebrated Uganda’s independence anniversary in Juba. Amb. Brig. Gen. Ronnie Balya’ndc’ (pictured below) was the chief guest.

The guests who attended included the director general of Immigration in South Sudan, Maj. Gen. Elia Kosta Faustino (pictured below).

Others included Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) officials, Uganda Embassy staff, National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) officials, and Ugandan immigration officials.

NIRA is in Juba to conduct national ID registration and renewal for Ugandans in South Sudan, who were encouraged to seize the opportunity.

After Juba, NIRA will move on to other Ugandan missions to provide the same services. For instance, the Authority will be in the Belgian city of Ghent on October 19.
