The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) contingent serving under the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) in Somalia has marked a change of command, with Lt Col Peter Barigye handing over leadership of UNGU XI to Lt Col Nathan Akankunda.
The UPDF in a statement shared said the on March 1, 2026, handover ceremony was presided over by Raisedon Zenenga, the deputy special representative of the UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres who conveyed the United Nations’ gratitude to the outgoing contingent and commended the troops for maintaining high security standards throughout their tour of duty.
“Members of UNGU XI have honoured the United Nations, their country Uganda and the UPDF with their dedication, discipline and professionalism. Your effective safeguarding of United Nations personnel, facilities and assets in Mogadishu has enabled the UN family to deliver on its mandate,” he said.
Zenenga observed that the absence of significant security incidents within the camp reflected the contingent’s vigilance and strong collaboration with counterparts under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
