P
olice in the Aswa West Region have arrested two suspects in connection with the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit motor vehicle and motorcycle lubricants following a joint security operation in Gulu district.

The operation, conducted on May 30, 2026, followed intelligence reports about illegal activities at a residence in Layibi cell, Gulu city.

According to police, the raid was carried out jointly with the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and internal security agencies.

During the operation, security personnel recovered several boxes of suspected counterfeit lubricants, as well as equipment believed to have been used in sealing and packaging the products.

The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue, according to Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma.

He made the remarks while addressing a press conference on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.

Police said the operation is part of broader efforts to dismantle networks involved in the production and distribution of fake automotive products, which have increasingly affected motorists across the country.

Authorities warned members of the public against purchasing lubricants from unauthorised dealers, saying many vehicle owners are attracted by unusually low prices only to end up with products that damage engines and other mechanical components.

Police noted that counterfeit oils and lubricants pose a significant risk to motorists and can lead to costly repairs and premature engine failure.

The force said photographs and additional details from the operation will be released to support ongoing public awareness campaigns aimed at combating counterfeit products in the automotive sector.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the operation and identify other individuals who may be connected to the illegal trade.
