SOROTI — Police in Soroti City have launched investigations into a suspected mob justice incident that left two street children burnt to death and another seriously injured.
The incident occurred at around 2:00am on Monday, August 3, 2026, along Town Talks Street in Soroti Central Ward, Soroti East Division. The area is well known for accommodating street children and commercial sex workers.
According to preliminary police findings, three street children were allegedly attacked by an angry mob on suspicion of theft. Two of the victims were beaten and set ablaze, while the third victim was rescued by police officers and rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
The survivor has been identified as George Evaku. Police said the identities of the two deceased street children had not yet been established by Monday morning.
Kyoga East Regional Police Commander Ibrahim Saiga said the bodies of the deceased had been taken to the Soroti City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

"The bodies of the deceased have been conveyed to the Soroti City mortuary for postmortem examination, and investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible," Saiga said.
In a statement, Saiga strongly condemned acts of mob justice, emphasising that every suspect is entitled to due process under the law.
He urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to the police instead of taking the law into their own hands.
