Two refugee girls die in makeshift gold mine

Two refugee girls, from zone 5 in Bidibidi and Imvepi settlements have died at a gold mining site in Odravu West sub-county in Yumbe district.

The fatal incident reportedly happened on Sunday when a tunnel they had dug caved in thus burying them.

Odravu West sub-county chairperson Geoffrey Driwale on Monday, April 8, 2024, said efforts by those close to the site of the incident to rescue the two girls proved futile.



Office of the Prime Minister Bidibidi deputy settlement commandant Wilson Mugabe settlement identified one of the deceased as Nancy Keji, a former student of Yangani SS. However, the other victim's identity is unclear.
