Two men have died after they were reportedly overcome by lack of oxygen while repairing a water pump inside a deep well in Kakindu sub-county, Mityana District.
The incident occurred on August 16, 2026, at about 1:00pm in Bifuma village, where the two men were reportedly working at the home of Mohammed Bamulanzeeki.
One of the deceased was only identified as Rasta, while the second was identified as Brown Rogers, according to Police.
Preliminary Police investigations indicate that Rasta first descended into the deep underground well to repair the water pump but reportedly ran out of breath due to inadequate oxygen.
His colleague, Rogers, subsequently descended into the well in an attempt to assist him but also lost his breath, resulting in both men dying inside the well.
The incident was reported to Kakindu Police Station by Bifuma village chairperson, James Ssemango.
Police officers from Kakindu and Mityana, together with the Wamala Regional Fire and Rescue Services team, responded to the scene.
The rescue team assessed the site and retrieved the two bodies from the deep well, and the bodies were conveyed to Mityana General Hospital for postmortem examinations.
Police said the identities of the two deceased men had not yet been fully established because their employer had reportedly not presented them to local leaders for profiling.
Police urged people who hire workers for various jobs to ensure that they profile the people they hire.
Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
