The Police in the West Nile region have detained two male refugees over the alleged defilement of an 18-year-old mentally challenged individual.

The suspects, Isaac Pitia and Emmanuel Okello, both South Sudanese residing in the same camp, are accused of sexually assaulting the victim on March 19, 2024.

Reports indicate that the suspects took advantage of the victim's vulnerability during a wedding ceremony at Block 4 of the refugee camp, according to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

"Under the guise of providing her company, they lured her away from the venue and dragged her to a bush roadside approximately 400 metres away. There, they subjected her to sexual assault," Enanga said.

He made the revelations during the weekly joint security briefing on Monday, March 25, 2024, at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.

According to Enanga, the victim was discovered about 5:00 am after which she 'bravely recounted her ordeal to Modong Viola', who promptly identified the perpetrators.

"This appalling incident highlights the heightened vulnerability of individuals with disabilities, who often face increased risks of violence and abuse due to their dependence on others, communication challenges, and lack of awareness about their rights and boundaries," Enanga said.

Addressing the issue, law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of raising awareness and advocating for the rights of disabled individuals to prevent bias and safeguard their well-being.

He said Police detectives are actively pursuing the case of sexual abuse, gathering crucial evidence including DNA samples from the victim and the suspects for comparison.
